Jan 15, 2020 How to download Microsoft Edge 79 Stable Microsoft Edge is now available to download on iOS, Android, and all supported versions of Windows and macOS in over 90 languages, offering a cross-platform. Welcome to the latest Beta channel update! Welcome insiders, you've been upgraded to Microsoft Edge version 79, which contains many of the improvements and fixes that have been released on the Canary and Dev channels in the past weeks, including updates. Jan 17, 2020 Microsoft Edge - Chromium Edge Browser 79 Microsoft rolled out the latest version of its Edge browser, Edge 79, on January 15, 2020. This update, codenamed ‘Project Anaheim’, is a landmark shift for Microsoft, from the EdgeHTML engine to the Chromium engine. It has been a week since Microsoft released the Stable version of their new Chromium-based Edge browser. Now the browser has had its second update, taking it to version 79.0.309.71. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not released a changelog yet, so it is difficult to say what’s new, but we will update this post as soon as.

Alongside all the features and improvements in the roadmap for the new version of Microsoft Edge based on the Chromium engine, Microsoft includes a compatibility mode using the Internet Explorer rendering engine to load old websites.

The feature is known as “IE Mode,” and it has been designed for organizations to load internal sites without using a separate browser or having to redesign the site. The new approach loads the pages within Microsoft Edge like a regular website without using and managing multiple browsers.

If you want to start using it, the version of Microsoft Edge available through the stable channel now includes the “Internet Explorer compatibilities” settings to quickly enable IE Mode and a separate option to open Edge when browsing an incomparable website with Internet Explorer. Alongside the settings, it also possible to use the Group Policy Editor to configure the compatibility mode.

In this guide, you will learn the steps to enable IE Mode to load legacy websites using the Internet Explorer rendering engine on Chromium Edge for Windows 10. (You can also watch this video tutorial to configure the feature.)

How to enable IE mode on Microsoft Edge

To enable IE mode on Edge, use these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.

  2. Click the Settings and More (ellipsis) button on the top-right corner.

  3. Select the Settings option.

  4. Click on Default browser.

  5. Under the “Internet Explorer compatibility” section, turn on the “Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode” toggle switch.

  6. Click the Restart button.

Once you complete the steps, when sites require Internet Explorer, you can use Microsoft Edge to reload the page using IE mode.

Open site with IE Mode on Edge

After the IE Mode is enabled, you need to reload a page with the compatibility mode manually.

To open an incompatible website with IE Mode on Edge, use these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.

  2. Click the Settings and More (ellipsis) button on the top-right corner.

  3. Select the More tools submenu and choose the “Reload in Internet Explorer mode” option.

After you complete the steps, the website should reload in compatibility mode. If the feature is not enabled, then the option won’t be available in the menu.

If you want to exit IE Mode, you can use the same instructions, but on step No. 3, select the Exit Internet Explorer mode option.

Open Internet Explorer sites on Microsoft Edge

On Windows 10, Microsoft Edge also lets you configure the browser so that when someone is using Internet Explorer incompatible or all sites will load within Edge.

Microsoft Edge 79

To let IE open websites with Edge, use these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.

  2. Click the Settings and More (ellipsis) button on the top-right corner.

  3. Select the Settings option.

  4. Click on Default browser.

  5. Under the “Internet Explorer compatibility” section, use the “Let Internet Explorer open sites in Microsoft Edge” drop-down menu and select the option to handle browsing when using Internet Explorer, including:

    • Never – IE will never switch to Edge to load the site.
    • Incompatible sites only – IE will still load sites, but websites designed for a modern browser will load in Edge.
    • Always – IE will always switch to Edge to load websites.

Once you complete the steps, when surfing the web in Internet Explorer, websites will open on Microsoft Edge, according to your configuration.

How to enable IE mode with Group Policy on Microsoft Edge

Alternatively, you can also enable IE Mode on Chromium Edge with Group Policy. However, you will need to download and install the policy template before you can configure the Group Policy settings.

Install Microsoft Edge policy template

To install the policy template to enable IE Mode on Edge, use these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge for business website.

  2. Under the “Policy File” section, click the Download button.

  3. Select the version of Microsoft Edge. (Usually, you want to use the latest stable version available.)

  4. Select the build (latest version available).

  5. Select the platform — for example, Windows 64-bit.

  6. Click the Get policy files option.

  7. Click the Accept & download button.

  8. Double-click to open the MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates.zip file.

  9. Click the Extract all button from the “Compressed Folder Tools” tab.

  12. Click the Extract button.

  13. Browse the following path inside the (extracted) “MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates” folder:

  14. Select the msedge.admx and msedgeupdate.admx files and click the Copy option from the “Home” tab.

Quick tip: You only need to copy the “msedgeupdate.admx” file if you want to control the update settings of Microsoft Edge.
  15. Browse to the following path:

  16. Click the Paste button from the “Home” tab.

  17. In the “admx” folder, inside the “MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates” folder, open the language folder that represents your language — for example, en-US.

  18. Select the msedge.adml and msedgeupdate.adml files and click the Copy option from the “Home” tab.

Quick tip: You only need to copy the “msedgeupdate.adml” file if you also copy the file on step No.12.
  19. Browse to the following path that matches your language:

In the above command, make sure to change en-US for the folder that matches your language.

  20. Click the Paste button from the “Home” tab.

Once you complete the steps, the new policies to enable or disable IE Mode on Edge Chromium will install in the Group Policy Editor.

Enable IE Mode on Microsoft Edge

To enable IE Mode on Chromium Edge with Group Policy, use these steps:

  1. Open Start.

  2. Search for gpedit and click the top result to open the Group Policy Editor.

  3. Browse the following path:

  4. Double-click the Configure Internet Explorer integration policy.

  5. Select the Enabled option to enable IE Mode for Microsoft Edge.

  6. Under the “Options” section, select the Internet Explorer mode from the dropdown menu.

  7. Click the Apply button.

  8. Click the OK button.

After you complete the steps, websites will render in compatibility mode, and you’ll notice a familiar IE icon on the left side of the address bar letting you know the website is using Internet Explorer.

These steps enable IE Mode for intranet websites. If you want to load external websites using Chromium Edge, you need to enable and set up the “Configure the Enterprise Mode Site List” policy, which includes the creation of an XML file with the list of domains that you want to load automatically with the Internet Explorer mode.

Update February 11, 2021: This guide has been revised with the steps to configure IE Mode on the Chromium version of Microsoft Edge using the new compatibility settings and updated the process to install the Group Policy templates.

Applies to: Configuration Manager (Current Branch)

The all-new Microsoft Edge is ready for business. Starting in Configuration Manager version 1910, you can now deploy Microsoft Edge, version 77 and later to your users. A PowerShell script is used to install the Edge build selected. The script also turns off automatic updates for Edge so they can be managed with Configuration Manager.

Deploy Microsoft Edge

Admins can pick the Beta, Dev, or Stable channel, along with a version of the Microsoft Edge client to deploy. Each release incorporates learnings and improvements from our customers and community.

Prerequisites for deploying

Microsoft Edge 79.0

For clients targeted with a Microsoft Edge deployment:

  • PowerShell Execution Policy can't be set to Restricted.

    • PowerShell is executed to perform the installation.
  • The Microsoft Edge installer and CMPivot are signed with the Microsoft Code Signing certificate. If that certificate isn't listed in the Trusted Publishers store, you'll need to add it. Otherwise, the Microsoft Edge installer and CMPivot won’t run when the PowerShell execution policy is set to AllSigned.

The device running the Configuration Manager console needs access to the following endpoints for deploying Microsoft Edge:

Verify Microsoft Edge update policies

Configuration Manager version 1910

In version 1910, when Microsoft Edge is deployed, the installation script turns off automatic updates for Microsoft Edge so they can be managed with Configuration Manager. You can change this behavior using Group Policy. For more information, see Plan your deployment of Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Edge update policies.

Configuration Manager version 2002 and later

Starting in version 2002, you can create a Microsoft Edge application that's set up to receive automatic updates rather than having automatic updates disabled. This change allows you to choose to manage updates for Microsoft Edge with Configuration Manager or allow Microsoft Edge to automatically update. When creating the application, select Allow Microsoft Edge to automatically update the version of the client on the end user's device on the Microsoft Edge Settings page. If you previously used Group Policy to change this behavior, Group Policy will overwrite the setting made by Configuration Manager during installation of Microsoft Edge.

Create a deployment

Create a Microsoft Edge application using the built-in application experience, which makes Microsoft Edge easier to manage:

  1. In the console, under Software Library, there's a new node called Microsoft Edge Management.

  2. Select Create Microsoft Edge Application from either the ribbon, or by right-clicking on the Microsoft Edge Management node.

  3. On the Application Settings page of the wizard, specify a name, description, and location for the content for the app. Ensure the content location folder you specify is empty.

  4. On the Microsoft Edge Settings page, select:

    • The channel to deploy
    • The version to deploy
    • If you want to Allow Microsoft Edge to automatically update the version of the client on the end user's device (added in version 2002)
  5. On the Deployment page, decide if you want to deploy the application. If you select Yes, you can specify your deployment settings for the application. For more information about deployment settings, see Deploy applications.

  6. In Software Center on the client device, the user can see and install the application.

  2. In the Software Library workspace, expand Microsoft Edge Management and click on the All Microsoft Edge Updates node.

  3. If needed, click Synchronize Software Updates in the ribbon to start a synchronization. For more information, see Synchronize software updates.

  4. Manage and deploy Microsoft Edge updates like any other update, such as adding them to your automatic deployment rule. Some of the common updates tasks you can do from the All Microsoft Edge Updates node include:

Microsoft Edge Management dashboard

(Introduced in version 2002)

Starting in Configuration Manager 2002, the Microsoft Edge Management dashboard provides you insights on the usage of Microsoft Edge and other browsers. In this dashboard, you can:

Microsoft
  • See how many of your devices have Microsoft Edge installed
  • See how many clients have different versions of Microsoft Edge installed.
    • This chart doesn't include Canary Channel.
  • Have a view of the installed browsers across devices
  • Have a view of preferred browser by device
    • Currently for the 2002 release, this chart will be empty.

Prerequisites for the dashboard

Enable the following properties in the below hardware inventory classes for the Microsoft Edge Management dashboard:

  • Installed Software - Asset Intelligence (SMS_InstalledSoftware)

    • Software Code
    • Product Name
    • Product Version
  • Default Browser (SMS_DefaultBrowser)

    • Browser Program ID
  • Browser Usage (SMS_BrowserUsage)

    • BrowserName
    • UsagePercentage

View the dashboard

From the Software Library workspace, click Microsoft Edge Management to see the dashboard. Change the collection for the graph data by clicking Browse and choosing another collection. By default your five largest collections are in the drop-down list. When you select a collection that isn't in the list, the newly selected collection takes the bottom spot on your drop-down list.
